Amazon Web Services (AWS) has released new AI technologies including Bedrock and Titan, a foundational large language model (LLM), and a cloud computing service called Bedrock, which will allow customers to build their own chatbots and image generators. These new releases come as Microsoft and Google integrate AI chatbots into their search engines and cloud operations.
LLMs, such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 and ChatGPT, are rapidly gaining popularity in the tech industry, inspiring large investments in AI labs and disrupting business operations for major players. These models can take any kind of written input and transform, translate, or interpret it in various ways.
AWS’s Bedrock allows businesses to customize “foundation models” using their own data, which are core AI technologies that serve as starting points for companies to build upon. By fine-tuning the models with additional training and proprietary data, companies can customize the models for their own needs. Amazon’s proprietary LLM foundation models, known collectively as Amazon Titan, as well as models from third-party companies like AI21 Labs, Anthropic, and Stability AI, will be available to customers through Bedrock.
One of the key aspects of providing the Bedrock service will be allowing AWS customers to test these new AI technologies without managing the underlying data center servers. Amazon says the underlying servers for the Bedrock service will use a combination of Amazon’s custom AI chips, AWS Trainium and AWS Inferentia, as well as GPUs from Nvidia, the largest supplier of AI chips.
In addition, Amazon has announced a preview of Amazon CodeWhisperer, an AI-powered coding assistant similar to GitHub Copilot and Replit Ghostwriter. It’s free for individual use and available for evaluation today.
